INSIGHT
What inspired you to start your company?
I actually started my career as a model and professional dancer. I’ve always had a passion for the arts since I can remember being alive. Dancing has always been my first love. I was dancing professionally all my life really, and by age 16 I was dancing professionally both on and off screen for music artists like Jennifer Lopez, Eve and Sean Combs to name a few. At the same time, I was also embracing my passion for planning parties, which also started when I was a teeny tot. I remember planning these huge events every New Year’s Eve for my Cabbage Patch Kids dolls, Barbie and her crew. I guess I always had it in me.
Around the same age of 16, my friends and I created our own little event planning team called 4 Star Entertainment (it was 4 of us) and we would plan and produce our own showcases at a well-known clubs in our area, which allowed me to marry both my passion to perform and to plan events. It was then that I knew I wanted to do this for the rest of my life, but I honestly didn’t think I could make a living from it back then.

Fast forward to 2006 when I moved to Atlanta. My desire to be an entrepreneur grew even stronger. I was still dancing, less on the TV screen and more for fun teaching at a local dance school and Kennesaw State University. Event Planning was big on the scene by this time and I knew this was a perfect time to get in the business and show the world what I could do. I always maintained great jobs with big companies, but I always knew I wanted something of my own, that allowed me to create my own outlet of creativity and entertain the world and so The Posh Event was born. The Posh Event was my first baby that I created in 2008, eventually, I re-branded the company after my own namesake – Tim Duncan Events and now I predominantly focus on teaching other wedding professionals how to create a successful wedding business via The Bombshell Business Academy.

What services does your company offer? My company focuses on helping female entrepreneurs in the wedding industry by teaching them how to create irresistible wedding businesses, attract their dream clients and crush their competition. My signature program is called the Bombshell Business Academy, a 8 week Bootcamp that teaches them exactly how to run a successful business in today’s market. I still plan events but for selective clients. My company also does visual brand design for wedding professionals by creating websites, logos and brand collateral.
What are the pros & cons of running your company? I truly love the fact I’m personally making an impact that I can actually see which truly inspires and empowers me. I am in control of my life, no one can put a salary cap on me, or tell me what I can and cannot do. I don’t have to request permission to spend time with my kids 2 weeks out of the year, or take a sick day or ask someone else to control when I get a raise. I am in control of that. But on the flipside, that can also be a con. If I don’t get out and hustle my butt off, I don’t eat. So you have to be disciplined. Because if you don’t do the work, you won’t reap the benefits. If I want to maintain my lifestyle I have to hustle and it’s not easy being the shot caller and decision maker all the time.

What is your favorite motivational phrase or quote? If you don’t like something change it, if you can’t change it – change your attitude.
What or who motivates you every day? My trust in God motivates me every day – I know that with him all things are possible. He gives me strength beyond what is human. My family also motivates me every day. I have been blessed to have a strong family of both women and men who work hard and go after what they want. I look at their accomplishments and know that anything is possible. My children motivate me as well. I have these two amazing beings that I am responsible for and I can’t let them down.

Do you have a mentor and if so, who and why? I have been blessed to learn from and work with many strong influences in my creative industry like Lara Casey, Emily Ley, Natalie Bradley, Marie Forleo and Melanie Duncan to name a few. However, the most consistent mentoring I’ve had is from my family. More specifically, my sister who has been a successful entrepreneur for over 15 years, my husband, who is a professional business coach by trade and my niece and nephew who are also young entrepreneurs, setting their own path in their industries, which also happens to be artistic. I’ve learned so much from all of them in so many different ways. They each have a genuine interest in seeing me succeed. I respect their opinions and their guidance. They are business savvy and respect my craft and know what it feels like to be an entrepreneur. They can relate to some of the struggles and successes I have and won’t just tell me what they think I want to hear. Whenever I’m having doubts they encourage and push me to reinvent myself and move forward. Im truly blessed to have such a talented family.

What do you feel your purpose in life is? My purpose in life is to empower, educate and inspire people to do big things.
How do you want to inspire others around you? I want other people to be able to look at my experience as a testament that you can do anything you put your mind to, regardless of your circumstances. I made a risky choice to move to Atlanta back in 2006 with less than $500 in the bank and no job. But I had a plan, and I never lost sight of my plan. Before I moved, I wrote down several things I wanted to accomplish and I accomplished every one of them because of my ambition to succeed.

What advice could you give to up and coming entrepreneurs looking to live their dreams? Face the fear and do it anyway (and never settle). It’s easier to settle and take the easy route, or to blend in with everyone else. But this is usually driven out of fear. Sometimes we get in our own way because we don’t think we are smart enough, or have enough experience, or popular enough, or thin enough… whatever our own insecurities and fears are that prevent us from doing the things we really want to do. But we need to push through the fear and do it anyway. Yes it is a scary thing to run a business, but if you want it bad enough, then find a way to make it happen. I hate excuses. Through my own experiences, it’s been those times when I was just about to throw in the towel that some breakthrough happened and re-energized me.

How do you keep a balanced life with work and family? I’ll be honest, Im still working on this one, lol. But I try to make it a habit to give my designated time to my business and cut off business when its family time. My life is jammed packed with responsibilities so I have to be intentional with everything I do on a weekly basis. I try to create a schedule for myself every week, that doesn’t always work. I have two small kids at home who don’t know the concept of time none whatsoever, so Im usually working around their schedule. This may mean that my plan to work on my training classes at 9am gets pushed to 11pm or even 6am when the house is quiet and they are asleep. But when I am working, I close myself off to only focus on that. And when I’m done, Im done. No emails, no phones, no social media – just me and my family. My husband is my rock and is the best dad in the world. I have an amazing support system and this helps me get things done when I need quiet time.

What do you feel has been your most successful accomplishment to this point in your career? The ability to help people improve their lives. I want nothing more than to be able to make an impact for someone who may feel lost or stuck or overwhelmed and show them there is a better way.

What song would you say expresses your inner self? Geez –there are so many, I really can’t think of one song that defines me. I would say every Beyoncé song features some part of my inner self at some point in my life.

What’s next for you? Im super excited about the 2nd launch of my Bombshell Business Academy program this February. From there, I will be promoting my Bombshell Experience Live Workshops across the country.
Thanks Timeesha for sharing your journey with you. Hope that you all are inspired to Live Your Dreams!
Until Next Time…
