Celebrating My 49th Birthday Year…

12 Sep

Hello Family….

Wow I can’t believe that we’re at the end of summer, which is sad I know however the good part of that is it’s the start of my birthday month “SEPTEMBER” whooohoooo!!!

I have for years always made a really big deal about my birthday.  However when it came to this upcoming 49th birthday, I really had no idea what I could do to celebrate.  So I decided to search the internet :), and I stumbled across a woman who had come up with a brilliant idea to do “49 Acts of Kindness” in honor of her birthday.  Needless to say I LOVED the idea.

We’ll my birthday is less than 3 weeks away, so with my crazy/busy schedule I think I need more time.  So then it happened. A light bulb went off 🙂 I decided that for my entire 49th year I would like to honor that year by doing LOTS of Random Acts of Kindness and journaling the process.  I’ve always said that there is no better gift than the gift of giving…I love love love love lovvvveeeeee to give.

So in starting my new adventure I need your help.  Can you please help me with “Random Acts of Kindness Ideas“.

You can place them on my facebook page or email me.

A Phenomenal Woman…

7 May

This is a very special day for both my family and myself.  I am so blessed that God choose this phenomenal  woman to be my mom.  She’s a great teacher, leader, motivator, cheerleader, wife, friend, and above all an amazing Woman of God.  I’ve seen her tackle the stresses and struggles of life but through it all she showed both my siblings and myself how to keep God first no matter what.

I know that this blog post has absolutely nothing to do with Events or Event Planning however I wanted to take a moment to celebrate my mom “Nikey Valentine-Barber” and a milestone that was reached in her life on today.  A year ago today my stepfather passed from away and took his rightful place in heaven.  He was an incredible man of which so many of us loved and adored, and on today she has done 2 things released her new website (www.bcauseicare.com) but more exciting than that she is now a Author of “I Choose You Again”.    My stepfather passed away with the Alzeheimers Disease.  Through this process she journaled her journey.  With much encouragement, she decided that if this process that she had to endure could help someone else that it was worth sharing her intimate story.  It was a very stressful and trying illness but my mom showed us how to handle it with both grace & dignity.

No# of years in business: 19 years (I started young! lol) / 7 years professional

What inspired you to start your company?

I actually started my career as a model and professional dancer.  I’ve always had a passion for the arts since I can remember being alive. Dancing has always been my first love.  I was dancing professionally all my life really, and by age 16 I was dancing professionally both on and off screen for music artists like Jennifer Lopez, Eve and Sean Combs to name a few.  At the same time, I was also embracing my passion for planning parties, which also started when I was a teeny tot.  I remember planning these huge events every New Year’s Eve for my Cabbage Patch Kids dolls, Barbie and her crew.  I guess I always had it in me.

Around the same age of 16, my friends and I created our own little event planning team called 4 Star Entertainment (it was 4 of us) and we would plan and produce our own showcases at a well-known clubs in our area, which allowed me to marry both my passion to perform and to plan events.  It was then that I knew I wanted to do this for the rest of my life, but I honestly didn’t think I could make a living from it back then.

Fast forward to 2006 when I moved to Atlanta.  My desire to be an entrepreneur grew even stronger.  I was still dancing, less on the TV screen and more for fun teaching at a local dance school and Kennesaw State University.  Event Planning was big on the scene by this time and I knew this was a perfect time to get in the business and show the world what I could do.  I always maintained great jobs with big companies, but I always knew I wanted something of my own, that allowed me to create my own outlet of creativity and entertain the world and so The Posh Event was born. The Posh Event was my first baby that I created in 2008, eventually, I re-branded the company after my own namesake – Tim Duncan Events and now I predominantly focus on teaching other wedding professionals how to create a successful wedding business via The Bombshell Business Academy.

What services does your company offer?  My company focuses on helping female entrepreneurs in the wedding industry by teaching them how to create irresistible wedding businesses, attract their dream clients and crush their competition.   My signature program is called the Bombshell Business Academy, a 8 week Bootcamp that teaches them exactly how to run a successful business in today’s market. I still plan events but for selective clients.  My company also does visual brand design for wedding professionals by creating websites, logos and brand collateral.

What are the pros & cons of running your company?  I truly love the fact I’m personally making an impact that I can actually see which truly inspires and empowers me.  I am in control of my life, no one can put a salary cap on me, or tell me what I can and cannot do. I don’t have to request permission to spend time with my kids 2 weeks out of the year, or take a sick day or ask someone else to control when I get a raise. I am in control of that. But on the flipside, that can also be a con. If I don’t get out and hustle my butt off, I don’t eat.  So you have to be disciplined. Because if you don’t do the work, you won’t reap the benefits.  If I want to maintain my lifestyle I have to hustle and it’s not easy being the shot caller and decision maker all the time.

What is your favorite motivational phrase or quote? If you don’t like something change it, if you can’t change it – change your attitude.

What or who motivates you every day?  My trust in God motivates me every day – I know that with him all things are possible. He gives me strength beyond what is human.  My family also motivates me every day. I have been blessed to have a strong family of both women and men who work hard and go after what they want. I look at their accomplishments and know that anything is possible.  My children motivate me as well.  I have these two amazing beings that I am responsible for and I can’t let them down.

Do you have a mentor and if so, who and why?   I have been blessed to learn from and work with many strong influences in my creative industry like Lara Casey, Emily Ley, Natalie Bradley, Marie Forleo and Melanie Duncan to name a few. However, the most consistent mentoring I’ve had is from my family.  More specifically, my sister who has been a successful entrepreneur for over 15 years, my husband, who is a professional business coach by trade and my niece and nephew who are also young entrepreneurs, setting their own path in their industries, which also happens to be artistic.  I’ve learned so much from all of them in so many different ways.  They each have a genuine interest in seeing me succeed. I respect their opinions and their guidance. They are business savvy and respect my craft and know what it feels like to be an entrepreneur.  They can relate to some of the struggles and successes I have and won’t just tell me what they think I want to hear.  Whenever I’m having doubts they encourage and push me to reinvent myself and move forward.   Im truly blessed to have such a talented family.

What do you feel your purpose in life is?  My purpose in life is to empower, educate and inspire people to do big things.

How do you want to inspire others around you?  I want other people to be able to look at my experience as a testament that you can do anything you put your mind to, regardless of your circumstances.   I made a risky choice to move to Atlanta back in 2006 with less than $500 in the bank and no job.  But I had a plan, and I never lost sight of my plan. Before I moved, I wrote down several things I wanted to accomplish and I accomplished every one of them because of my ambition to succeed.

What advice could you give to up and coming entrepreneurs looking to live their dreams? Face the fear and do it anyway (and never settle).  It’s easier to settle and take the easy route, or to blend in with everyone else. But this is usually driven out of fear.  Sometimes we get in our own way because we don’t think we are smart enough, or have enough experience, or popular enough, or thin enough… whatever our own insecurities and fears are that prevent us from doing the things we really want to do.  But we need to push through the fear and do it anyway. Yes it is a scary thing to run a business, but if you want it bad enough, then find a way to make it happen.  I hate excuses.  Through my own experiences, it’s been those times when I was just about to throw in the towel that some breakthrough happened and re-energized me.

How do you keep a balanced life with work and family? I’ll be honest, Im still working on this one, lol.  But I try to make it a habit to give my designated time to my business and cut off business when its family time.  My life is jammed packed with responsibilities so I have to be intentional with everything I do on a weekly basis.  I try to create a schedule for myself every week, that doesn’t always work.  I have two small kids at home who don’t know the concept of time none whatsoever, so Im usually working around their schedule.  This may mean that my plan to work on my training classes at 9am gets pushed to 11pm or even 6am when the house is quiet and they are asleep.  But when I am working, I close myself off to only focus on that. And when I’m done, Im done. No emails, no phones, no social media – just me and my family.  My husband is my rock and is the best dad in the world.  I have an amazing support system and this helps me get things done when I need quiet time.

What do you feel has been your most successful accomplishment to this point in your career? The ability to help people improve their lives.  I want nothing more than to be able to make an impact for someone who may feel lost or stuck or overwhelmed and show them there is a better way.

What song would you say expresses your inner self? Geez –there are so many, I really can’t think of one song that defines me.  I would say every Beyoncé song features some part of my inner self at some point in my life.

What’s next for you?  Im super excited about the 2nd launch of my Bombshell Business Academy program this February.  From there, I will be promoting my Bombshell Experience Live Workshops across the country.

Thanks Timeesha for sharing your journey with you.  Hope that you all are inspired to Live Your Dreams!

Until Next Time…

Good Morning…Time To MAKEUP!

20 Feb

I was desperately searching for a awesome makeup artist who did great work but after their makeup applications I would still want to walk away looking beautiful but like myself (if you know what I mean).  During my search, I came across the name of LaTonya Winters.  She was highly recommended by a few friends that we both have in common.  I needed a makeup artist for a television segment and she did not disappoint.  Needless to say I’ve been using her every since then.  She always arrives at my home in the absolute best spirit and transforms me from my “not so friendly morning face” to the beauty that you’ve seen on the news.  I would simply be lost with her.  Thanks for sharing your artistic abilities with me and always willing to share a few tricks with me as well.  She has a awesome story to tell so I thought it would be inspiring to share them with you today… ENJOY!

No# of years in business: 15 years

  1. What inspired you to start your company? I had a desire to be an entrepreneur and I am extremely passionate in the arts. This ignited the creation of “La T’s Make-up Services” whereas my passion became my career.
  2. How long have you had this passion? For thirty years, I’ve had this passion which began in high school. I offered friends makeovers on the school bus. Despite my prime desire upon being a fashion designer, my love of make-up gravitated me into the make-up artistry.

3.  What services does your company offer? “La T’s Make-up Services” offers a variety of services such as make- up for red carpet events, television appearances, advertisement campaigns, weddings, and special occasions.

4.  What are the pros & cons of running your company? Pros: Dictating your own hours, goals, and job opportunities.  Cons: No corporation benefits, encounter dry spells (sometimes), and the luxury of attending company Christmas parties (which I truly miss)!

5.  What or who motivates you every day?  My family and clientele are my motivation. My adrenaline rushes from witnessing clients in tears from being content is genuinely rewarding. You’d be surprised how much the perfect lip color can brighten up someone’s day.

6.  What do you feel your purpose in life is?  My purpose is to enhance the beauty people fail to see within themselves.

7.  What advice could you give to up and coming entrepreneurs looking to live their dreams? My advice to upcoming entrepreneurs is to never give-up. Do not expect instant gratification. Also to remain positive and have excellent social skills.

8.  How do you keep a balanced life with work and family? It’s pretty easy because I have an empty nest. My children are adults, and my husband works lengthy hours; however, we still remain balanced. We still squeeze in time to partake in dinner, cookouts, shopping, and other family functions.

10391842_236820840080_806095_n9.  What do you feel has been your most successful accomplishment to this point in your career? Reaching my goals! When I attended make-up school in 2000, I desired to work with celebrities, partake in major advertisement and television campaigns, work with world leaders and famous athletes. In addition, becoming respected in my field. I’ve managed to achieve all of these goals.

10402498_10153434061064517_7934724401355595288_n10.  What’s next for you?  That’s a good question. I aim to begin a make-up line and aspire to mentor young, upcoming artist; whereas, I would teach them more about the business aspect. People are so concerned about the artistry, but fail to realize the significance of understanding the business  aspect that supports being a make-up artist.

Thank You LaTonya for sharing your gift and talents with us.  I so appreciate all of the 4am morning appointments where you have made me look and feel beautiful.  Thank you for inspiring others to live their dreams.

Until Next Time, “Here’s To Living Your Dreams”….Lenee’ Valentine 🙂

Inspiration In A Snap…

14 Feb

I was fortunate enough to view the work of the amazingly talented Keith Cephus about 3 years ago in Virginia Beach at a Bridal Show.  We never spoke and I’m not even sure if I physically met him however I was in AWE of his work.  A year later I found myself scrolling through the pages of Munaluchi Bridal and came across the same type of work that I had seen previously at the Bridal Show in VA Beach.  Hmmm I thought.  I then decided to click on the photographers website and realized that it was the same photographers work that I had previously viewed two years prior.  His work took my breathe away.  I placed a call to him and had an immediate connection.  As our connection grew my fiance and I choose Keith to shoot our Engagement Photos… We loved his work so much that he then became our Wedding Photographer.

I personally think that his entrepreneurship spirit is awesome.  He’s a constant teacher, motivator and everyones personal cheerleader.  We started out as colleagues but have now become dear friends.  Be inspired….

What inspired me to start my company is my love for photography and creating art.  Photography gives me the opportunity to express myself through my images as well as to inspire others.  I’ve had this passion ever since I was ten. My mother used to be the family photographer and would photograph all of the family gatherings.  She was the one who got me into this wonderful world called photography.

My favorite quote is “If you give a person a fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach a person to fish, you feed them for a lifetime. “  I truly believe in giving back and blessing others so that they too can achieve their dreams and ambitions.

My purpose in life goes beyond taking pictures. My purpose is to coach other people in achieving and obtaining their goals.   I love coaching and showing people how to be successful and win at this thing called life.

The most important aspect in keeping my family and business balance is quiet easy. My family is intertwined with my business which gives me tremendous balance and allows me spend quality time with them.  My wife is the office manager of the company while my teenagers assist me in photo shoots and social media tasks.

The most successful accomplishment at this point in my career was taking my wife out of corporate America to assist me in the business. Her skillset in HR has taken the business to a complete higher level, along with her uncanny professionalism in customer service.

What’s next for me? I am currently working on a book about, “My Journey to Africa.”  I also want to do more traveling to pursue personal projects in Europe, Asia and Africa.

Screen Shot 2014-02-20 at 7.58.46 PM

I hope that Keith has inspired you to Live Your Dreams…I thank you personally for your creative eye and for always thinking outside of the box.  I’m always looking forward to our future PROJECTS!

Until Next Time….Smooches 🙂

My Secret Jewel…

6 Feb

I am super excited to introduce our very first “Featured Fridays” Series.  To kick off this Series, I am honored to highlight a woman whom I absolutely adore.  She owns a Beautiful Boutique Styled Consignment Shop in Old Town Alexandria, VA.  I was introduced to her shop about 3 years ago and I have made it my personal go to:  “Secret Hide Away Closet”.

Every time I’m in a pinch for the perfect outfit and with very short notice, this is my absolute 1st stop and I’m never disappointed nor do I leave empty handed.  She now knows my style, what I’m attracted to and what will fit me best.  She’s has NEVER been wrong!  Yahhh My Personal Boutique Stylist 🙂 every girl needs to have one!

I’ve gotten to know the owner Ms. Cindy McCartney and I can say that she is simply adorable from the inside out.  I find her and her lifes experiences to be so inspiring.  Please take a moment to read her story.  I’m sure that it will inspire you as it has inspired me over and over again.

  1. What inspired you to start your company?

I was a cosmetic executive for many years and had always known that I would someday leave the business to open my own boutique.  I had quite the shopping habit and my closets were bulging with the likes of Dolce and Gabbana, Chanel, Prada, Michael Kors, Diane von Furstenburg and so many other designers.  I had always enjoyed consignment (both consigning and shopping) so the idea was something that interested me very much.  At the time (2006) it was before consignment was as hot as it is now, and a lot of the shops out there were more like thrift shops with stuffed racks and wire hangers.  That was basically the impression people had about consignment at that point.  I wanted to make my store a warm, welcoming and upscale boutique.  I found a gorgeous Old Town Alexandria 1880’s townhouse which evokes a European feel in which to locate.  The inspiration for the name of the boutique, Diva, is one of my two rescue dachshunds—who came with the name—and it definitely fits her!

Diva front

  1. How long have you had this passion?

I have always loved fashion and quality clothing and accessories, as evidenced by my shopaholism prior to leaving the cosmetic business.  I wanted to make the experience of shopping at Diva very special and friendly, because that is the atmosphere I like to shop in.

  1. What services does your company offer?

We offer consignors the opportunity to recover some of their spends on items they never wore, wore once, or can’t wear anymore.  For our shoppers, we offer an expertly curated selection of bridge and designer clothing, handbags, shoes and accessories to buy at a fraction of what they’d cost at retail.

  1. What are the pros & cons of running your company?

I always say that my worst day at Diva is better than my best day while in the corporate world!  Owning a business is a challenge, no doubt about it.  But in spite of working very hard for other companies, I always felt the frustration of bureaucracy and hated spinning my wheels.  Here I put in so much more time and work but I have the freedom of moving ahead with new initiatives and ideas without that frustration.  I feel very lucky to be doing what I am doing!

  1. What is your favorite motivational phrase or quote?

Stay true to yourself.  And also….treat others as you’d like them to treat you.

  1. What or who motivates you every day?

I am extremely self-motivated and I enjoy what I am doing so much that it’s a pleasure to come to work.  Really.  I know it sounds corny!!!

jewelry case rings

  1. Do you have a mentor and if so, who and why?

My parents instilled in me from a very early age the importance of working hard to accomplish my goals.  My Dad was an amazing businessman who taught me so much.  He was loved and respected by the people he worked with and his customers,  and I always admired that so much.

  1. What do you feel your purpose in life is?

Do we ever really know that?  I think there is a bigger power and a reason for everything in your life.  All we can do is our best to live life well and to our best ability.

interior diva 2

  1. How do you want to inspire others around you?

I don’t think I would say that I inspire others, but the advice I would give anyone is to live their life to the fullest and don’t get caught up in the little problems.  Don’t bog yourself down with negative things.

  1. What advice could you give to up and coming entrepreneurs looking to live their dreams?

Don’t be afraid.  If you’ve done your homework about the business you want to start and have a passion for something and are ready to jump, do it.  Don’t regret later that you didn’t do it.  You will never be 100% prepared with every answer for every obstacle, but if you are motivated you will work through even the toughest situations.

  1. How do you keep a balanced life with work and family?

I learned how to do that when I was traveling all over the country in my corporate life.  Sometimes it seems that the more you have on your plate, the more you work through it to be able to enjoy whatever time you do have to relax.

  1. What do you feel has been your most successful accomplishment to this point in your career?

I am very thankful and really proud that Diva is going into its tenth year in business.

Diva shoe wall

  1. What’s next for you?

As Matthew McConaughey says, to “just keep livin’”.

Thank you Cindy for sharing your journey with us :).  I hope that this interview has inspired you to Live Your Wildest Dreams!

Until Next Time…Smooches 🙂

Super Bowl Prep…

26 Jan

Sometimes thinking about food is even more exciting than the actual event itself.

As my husband and I have been contemplating about what are some of the items that will be on our (possible) Super Bowl Party Menu, he decided that he wanted to try a new recipe that he came across.  In doing this, he also decided that we needed to sample this dish today (Sunday) which meant that “I” didn’t have to cook 🙂 … (whoohooo) So I left him in the kitchen to his recipe and creative ideas.

As I curiously peeped in to check on his status, I had to take a few “Before” Pictures…

pre crossaints

Okay, I said to myself…It looks like he knows exactly what he’s doing…Hmmm.  The proof will be in the pudding 🙂  Finally it was done!

What was pleasing to me was when he asked “Babe” we need to stage it so that it looks pretty on a plate..Can I say that “Mama was proud”  I guess all the staging that he has had to endure while helping me over the years has finally started to pay off…

…and here it is.  He did an AMAZING JOB (Very Good, I ate a few)

So to everyone whose contemplating something different to prepare for Super Bowl Sunday, I promise you that your guess won’t be disappointed with this one.  Check out the recipe link below:

The Gang’s All Here…

20 Jan

Sometimes the absolute best events that I am blessed to be apart of are the ones with those near and dear to me.  Sometimes it’s not about the linen, catered food or decor.  Sometimes it’s simply about tapping into what really matters friends and family.

There is nothing that excites me more than one of God’s greatest gifts “My Girlfriends“.  If you don’t have some, you really need to get yourself a few.  They love you unconditionally, they stand behind you through the good times as well as the bad.  They always tell you the truth about yourself (even when you don’t want to hear it).

I have been gifted with some of the absolute best girlfriends in the world.  They serve as a safe place for you to be totally transparent and without any judgement.

In honor of this, a few of my besties decided to do a sleepover..So much fun just being grown silly women…

We were all gifted with a pair of the cutest comfy cozy socks which symbolized that the sleepover was about to begin.

Here’s a few characteristics of a Great “BFF”:

Loyal, Intelligent, Sensitive, Sometimes Humorous, Honest, A Great Listener, Supportive & Amazingly Generous

It’s so therapeutic to be able to get things off your chest and know that it will stay with them confidently, and also know that they won’t share your private words or moments of vulnerability with anyone else.

They sometimes know you better than you know yourself.  They are able to sense when something is off with you and will quickly run to your rescue without a second thought (right on cue)  That’s what a Great BFF does!

Here’s a toast to a lifetime of friendship and an amazing 2015!

Until Next Time Ladies!!!

Love you, so blessed to have you in my life…
